Description

Filmed on location in Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia and the Caribbean, Dear Suburbia, is the latest release from Kai Neville and is the follow up to his previous films Modern Collective and Lost Atlas. It is a high-performance, location-based surf film set against exotic landscapes, objects and personalities juxtaposed with the traditions of suburban life. Spontaneity versus routine. The unknown versus the familiar. An interpretation of our lifestyle, culture, riding waves, traveling the world — a pirouette into the absurdity of it all. The result is a graceful, often schizophrenic glimpse at modern life with a surfboard and a passport.

  • Horrible soundtrak

The horrible soundtrack ruins watching some great surfing and the editing never shows an entire wave. Overall poor purchase.

I was really psyched to see this movie, but after finishing it, I was like, "was that it?" Modern was way better, wasn't really feeling the soundtrack. Def would not buy.

for sure, some of the craziest surfing i had ever seen. But the weird, slow music, and those random sculpture things take up 90% of the movie.. although the girl in one of them was hot.. nonetheless, i guess its artistic, and hip and what not

The style of modern collective was so much better than this. The soundtrack alone gives me a headache. Half of the movie is in slow motion. Seems to be trying too hard to imitate the "punk" style todays freesurfers think is so cool. Overall just annoying.
  • Legit surf movie

The music is all slow tempo, most of the video is in slow motion, and about a quarter of the video is just random crap spinning around on pedestals (just like in the movie poster). There's a bit of great surfing but you'll be asleep by the time you'd get to see it.
  • overall pretty solid

First half of the movie gets 3 stars, second half gets 5 stars. Dane Reynolds segment in Japan makes it worth the purchase price.
  • Japan Sections are worth the 10 bucks alone.

I can understand the griping about the first half of this movie, but there is no denying the fact that neville continues to capture the most progressive surfing on the planet. The Japan sections are incredible. Soundtrack is solid. I'm happy that I didn't have to suffer through the standard 5 slow motion sections of pipeline and indonesia or listen to surfers talk about spirituality...
