Description

From Saul Zaentz, the Academy Award-winning executive producer of "The English Patient," "Amadeus" and "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," and multi-Academy Award-nominee Peter Weir, the director of "Witness," "Fearless" and "The Truman Show," comes this exhilarating drama starring Academy Award-nominee Harrison Ford ("Firewall," "The Fugitive"). Based on the best-selling novel by Paul Theroux, this film tells the story of one man's attempt to create a utopian existence in the rain forest for his family, which ultimately evolves into a desperate fight for their survival. Co-starring Academy Award-winner Helen Mirren ("The Queen," "Raising Helen") and River Phoenix ("Stand by Me," "My Own Private Idaho"), Butterfly McQueen ("Gone with the Wind," "Cabin in the Sky") and Jason Alexander (TV's "Seinfeld," "Shallow Hal"). Gene Siskel called this movie "a compelling story beautifully told and acted!"

I first saw the film when I was 13. I loved the characters and overall story. It is complex and holds your attention!! The actors are of course brilliant⭐️⭐️ A must watch 🥂

Then Harrison Fords character becomes wholly unlikeable, fanatical, and narcissistic. Nothing special about River Phoenix’s performance of any of the supporting cast. The movie drags on to its obvious conclusion.

Absolutely compelling, a story about utopia gone wrong.

This movie really is a catcher. It shows you the extremity that some people will go to in order to do what they feel is right.

Harrison Ford has mentioned this as his favorite role he ever played. Allie Fox is an inventor fed up with America. He decides to bring his revolutionary ice-making technique to South America, where he will settle his family into a colony of his own design. He immediately clashes with the local preacher, resulting in some very entertaining shouting matches. Helen Mirren plays his long suffering wife, and River Phoenix plays his oldest son. Their utopian society is quickly invaded by outsiders, and sabotaged by their own human flaws. This movie has elements of humor and adventure, but is definitely not an Indiana Jones story. In fact, you may hate Harrison Ford's character by the time this movie is over. As Ford is one of Hollywood's most likable personalities, this only testifies to the quality of the acting and storytelling.

This is a movie which was way ahead of it's time. The message is more 21st century then 20th, and performances by River and Harrison as father and son are fantastic. They create a palpable tension which eventually explodes. Must have.
