Description

180° South: Conquerors of the Useless follows Jeff Johnson as he retraces the epic 1968 journey of his heroes Yvon Choulnard and Doug Tompkins to Patagonia. Along the way he gets shipwrecked off Easter Island, surfs the longest wave of his life - and prepares himself for a rare ascent of Cerro Corcovado. Jeff's life turns when he meets up in a rainy hut with Choulnard and Tompkins who, once driven purely by a love of climbing and surfing, now value above all the experience of raw nature - and have come to Patagonia to spend their fortunes to protect it.

you got to wonder about the accuracy in which this documentary wants to depict reality when the shot of him climbing is with ‘loose fleece mittens” ??

This is a great film. It is truly inspiring and, in a way, eye opening. You see a simple man living a simple life which is nice to see for a change and for me personally, inspirational. To live in a world of materialistic, possessive, and continual discontent it is nice to be reminded that it is possible to escape it all if you truly want to.
  • Politically Charged

I was excited from the preview. The movie started out good and then turned into a save the planet politically charged movie. Surfing and rock climbing were LAME! Not worth the money.

Brilliant film ! Very rewatchable, so I recommend a purchase. Great soundtrack, mostly by Ugly Casanova. For me this film defined a lot of blurry things in my life; why I wanted to travel, conflicting feelings towards big government and big business, ignorance toward better environmental practices, etc ... 180 South is very accessible, sincere, honest, and direct. You won't be disappointed and you'll be thinking about it for months and months to come. A great counterpart is Jared Diamond's book "Collapse", which is heavily influential in the film itself. Enjoy !
