Description

Its name: EVENT HORIZON. The high-tech, pioneering research spacecraft mysteriously vanished, without a trace, on its maiden voyage seven years earlier. But a weak, persistent signal form the long-missing craft prompts a rescue team, headed by the intrepid Captain Miller (Laurence Fishburne), to wing its way through the galaxy on a bold rescue mission. Accompanying Miller is his elite crew and the lost ship’s designer (Sam Neill); their mission is to find and salvage the state-of-the-art interstellar horror. Kathleen Quinlan and Joely Richardson also star in this gripping sci-fi thriller.

I still remember sneaking into this movie as a teen. At the time, it was considered a landmark achievement for the horror genre. It was the first truly successful modern fusion of horror, suspense and sci-fi that anyone had attempted in a long time. More importantly, it was the first modern attempt at that genre that didn’t include a “monster” or obvious standout villain. Instead the location itself was the threat. Something that is pretty common in haunted house movies but, at the time, wasn’t often seen in sci-fi flicks.
  • Just a horror movie

I saw this when it came out in the theaters, and I still remember how disappointed I was. I was hoping for interesting Sci-Fi, but what I saw was a horror movie that tried to use lots of blood and gore to make up for its lack of substance. Think "Hellraiser" in space. No fault of the actors, though: excellent cast.
