  • Bad movie, made for 3D gimmick, and a bad transfer

    2
    By Tom Dibble
The transfer appears to have been done in a pubic hair factory. Curly "shadows" show up in many scenes, including the intro. The Paramount logo is laughably horribly rendered almost like the "master" for this was a slightly-used VHS tape. Watching this back-to-back after the first two it is immediately evident that they didn't intend for people to do this. For instance, the ending of the second installment is completely retconned away. And, the Jason in this one isn't the horribly deformed Jason from the previous installment, but a much more mildly-disfigured man. It is almost as though this was made by a different company than the second, without access to the makeup artists or production staff to ensure continuity; I suspect, though, that the heavy prosthetics of Part II were okay for a few 30-second scenes but too much to carry on through this whole movie. Then there's the movie itself. While the first two installments were passable '80s horror (even classic in the case of the first), this one doesn't know what it wants to be. Clearly it is a product of the "3D" fad of the early '80s, replete with yo-yos surging towards the screen and poles being lunged at the viewer for no reason. I don't know if there is a "modern 3D" version of this movie out there, but you don't even get the effect here so all those "throw stuff at the camera" cliches are wasted these days (although I have to say the harpoon through the eye scene is a classic that has stuck with me since I first saw this on HBO in ~1985 or so). Then it is also a poorly-made slapstick comedy written by someone without a sense for comedy (including what must be Jonah Hill's early-80's doppleganger). You have typical 80s caricatures in the "thugs" who go after our main characters (you know what is going to happen to them the moment you see them on screen). Fred from Scooby Doo makes an apparent guest appearance here as the "romantic" interest of the "final girl". On the plus side, the killing (after the goofy laughable inrto) starts pretty early, unlike the previous two, so if you came for campy gore you at least get what you paid for. And at least the annoying Shelley is one of the first main characters to go. It is all incredibly predictable these days, even if it hadn't been done literally to death by 1982 when this came out. But if you are looking for mindless gore, a barely-there story, and the 80's making fun of the 80's, it is a decent movie to do that for you.
  • Another Classic

This part of this franchise seems to polarize fans. Personally I think this is one of the strongest chapters in the entire series. The 3-D effects were awesome at the theater in 1982....and I recall the crowd jumping out of their seats and being scared to death on several occasions. I think this is essential viewing for any horror fans. Part 3 is a classic!!

Other than this is the first film in which Jason wears his iconic hockey mask, this film isn't that much different from the first 2 films in this series.

I heard of the famous hockey mask. I watched part 2 and my first thought was " where's the mask?" This movie is great and underrated. Don't listen to rotten tomatoes

The third installment is the best! The kills were creative, it never ceases to entertain, and is the first time Jason dawns his infamous hockey mask! This is my favorite film of all time, and has been for years; this is a horror classic!
  • Good movie, bad format

Lemme preface this by saying that I love this movie, it's a good entry of the series. My main issue is that as a purist I want the movie as it was originally released in theaters, in 3D. Sure it was a gag and didn't work that well but for people like me who wants the real deal we want this movie in 3D, warts and all. Movie - 4 stars Format - 1 star Total - 2 stars

I came into this movie thinking it would be awesome. And I was right! It didn't beat the first 2, but it sure kicked butt!!!
